Jays Claim Catcher Heineman Off Waivers From Red Sox Designate Serven For Assignment

Jays claim catcher Heineman off waivers from Red Sox, designate Serven for assignment

Toronto claims another catcher

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed catcher Tucker Heineman off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and designated catcher Zack Serven for assignment in a corresponding move.

Heineman, 27, is a left-handed hitter who has appeared in 83 games over the past three seasons with the Red Sox, hitting .217/.306/.385 with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs.

Serven, 29, has played in 38 games for the Blue Jays over the past two seasons, batting .239/.305/.371 with two homers and 12 RBIs.

Heineman provides depth and experience

Heineman gives the Blue Jays another experienced catcher to add to their depth chart behind Danny Jansen.

Heineman has a career .340 on-base percentage in the minors and has thrown out 24% of basestealers.

The Blue Jays hope that Heineman can provide a solid option as a backup catcher and give Jansen some rest.

Serven designated for assignment

Serven was designated for assignment to make room for Heineman on the 40-man roster.

Serven has been a solid defensive catcher for the Blue Jays but has struggled at the plate.

The Blue Jays will now have 10 days to trade, release, or waive Serven.
