Memorial Day: Honoring Fallen Military Heroes
Origin and Meaning
Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that honors the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday is observed on the last Monday in May.The origin of Memorial Day can be traced back to the aftermath of the Civil War. In the years following the war, communities across the country held ceremonies to commemorate the lives of those who had died in the conflict. In 1868, General John A. Logan, the commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued an order calling for a nationwide day of remembrance to be held on May 30th.
